5 Hidden Messages in Arrietty | Studio Ghibli Masterpiece

1. Do not make assumptions about people

Arriety's dad told Arriety to stay away from humans as they were harmful. However, Sho was actually the opposite of what Arriety's dad told her and helped Arriety's family out of trouble.

2. People appreciate the small things more when they have less

Sho, who is weak and sick, is fascinated by Arriety. On the other hand, the aunt is greedy for the reward she would receive after she catches Arriety.

3.  Don't be quick to judge. You never know what someone may be going through.

Arriety was shocked when she realized that the boy understood her feelings of vulnerability and was sick. From the outside, Sho appeared to have it all.

4. We should protect the endangered species before they are gone.

The Borrowers is an endangered species and the aunt's attempt to catch the few Borrowers remaining reflects the lack of protection towards diminishing species in the modern world.

5. Some people are only meant to be in your life for a short amount of time and that is okay.

Despite the strong connection Arriety and Sho had formed, they both had to part ways in the end for the better. Arriety had to leave with her family to protect herself from the humans, whilst the boy had to stay in his town to get treated for hospitalization. Sho states "I will never forget you", showing the large impact Arriety had on his life.

Too many times I have looked at past friendships with people whom I have drifted with as 'failed' relationships. However, this movie served as an important reminder for me that, some people are only meant to help you through certain stages of your life and that is ok. Although they might not be your lifetime friend, this doesn't make your relationship any less special than it was.
